New award recognizes excellence in providing patient and family-centred care
(Kingston, ON, Feb. 13, 2017) Patients, families and staff have a new way to honour the caregivers at Hotel Dieu Hospital, a first-of-its-kind award spearheaded by the hospital body that champions patient and family-centred care.
This month, the hospital’s Patient & Family Council launched the Exceptional Healer: Patient and Family-Centred Care Physician Excellence Award. The annual honour will acknowledge a Hotel Dieu physician who demonstrates in his or her clinical practice the core concepts of Patient & Family Centred-Care, including dignity and respect, information sharing, participation and collaboration.
“We know how important patient and family-centred care is to Hotel Dieu and how it dovetails with the hospital’s mission and values,” says Patient Experience Advisor Sue Bedell. “Now the Patient & Family Council has a way of formally applauding those hospital physicians who create an excellent patient care experience over and above the norm.”
Patients, family members and hospital staff can all nominate a Hotel Dieu physician for the new award. Important criteria for nominees include personal qualities such as approachability and empathy; the use of innovative methods to deliver compassionate care; a pattern of respecting patient and family perspectives; and the ability to honour the uniqueness of patients and families by incorporating their knowledge, values, beliefs and cultural backgrounds into the planning and delivery of care.
The easy-to-complete nomination form is available on the hospital’s website at www.hoteldieu.com
. The nomination deadline is February 28, 2017.
